A few months ago I broke down and signed up on MySpace out of frustration at not being able to leave comments for the growing number of friends who use it to promote cool stuff they’re doing. So I quickly palled up with those people and left comments letting them all know how much they rock. Then unexpected things started happening.
First, I started finding and being found by people from the past. People I had long given up on or forgotten. But there they were (are).
Then, I started getting all these friend requests from people I don’t know. This has been a bit of a moral dilemma for me. I’m guessing that these people are seeking me out through my affiliation with one or another of MySpace’s “networks”, or maybe they have some secret predatory tool for finding newbies like me. Most of them are looking to promote themselves, others are looking for dates, but I must say I wasn’t prepared for it. A lot of their stuff, music more than anything else, really sucks.
“Will you be my friend?”
“Uh, well, no, I don’t think so.”
Then a couple days ago, I palled up with someone I know down in Lyon who asked, “Do you facebook?”
I replied, “myspace, skype, msn, gmail, blog, ichat, facebook, linkedin, friendster, yahoo, classmates, flickr, twitter, pluggedin, tieddown, networkhell whendoesiteverend… :S”
Then I signed up, understand absolutely nothing about it except that you can spend endless hours exploring it, adding on silly applications and basically wasting a lot of time. So, if you have an addictive personality like I do, well, you’re doomed.
And I must thank Thomas for posting the following video on Sylvain’s wall :
